This course aims to improve and expand upon studentsf current level of reading comprehension byusing a variety of noteworthy materials such as websites, news articles, short stories, stylistics
and web-based communication venues.
Increase reading comprehension/Build vocabulary profiles
Critical thinking/Gist reading for speed/Timed reading practice
Develop and record thoughtful reactions to what is being read
This first section of this course will center on reading checks and online surveys followed by reading many types of written material, giving students a wide range of reading material experience. The middle section of this course will guide students into gist reading and reading for content and speed, while the final part of this course will apply the first two sections in helping students gain confidence in reading comprehension.
Students will use general knowledge and apply speed-reading skills and critical thinking
skills to respond to passages and written text by using teacher and student selected
readings from a variety of venues. Familiarity with PPT, Web-designs, and online
navigation will be a value-added benefit to students taking this class.

40% on reading handouts
10% on quizzes
Selected materials will be provided by the instructor with some readings chosen by students.
Students should develop regular practice schedules outside of class. A notebook PC is a
valuable component for learning, as is quick reference web access for translation, word
checks and vocabulary building. A B5 notebook for keeping records and timely completion of projects is very useful.
