This course aims to raise your English speaking skills through the review and practice of basic Eng-lish, the preparation and delivery of short speeches on familiar topics, and vocabulary development.
Constant practice is required to improve or maintain language proficiency. You cannot passively ac-quire English speaking skills. Speaking 1 is your opportunity to use English to speak on familiar top-ics with a native English speaker to help and guide you. Improvement of basic English speaking skills, especially verb and tense accuracy, and increasing active vocabulary are specific objectives of this course.
Distance Learning: because of Covid-19, this class will be conducted through Google Classroom.
Week 1: Orientation: Speaking practice - Introduce yourself
Week 2: Language review - to be, has/have
Week 3: Speaking practice - Introduce someone - e.g. a movie/pop star,
Week 4~5: Language review - the simple present tense
Week 6: Speaking practice - My home town
Week 7~8: Language review - the simple past tense
Week 9: Speaking practice - Book review
Week 10~11: Language review - the present continuous tense
Week 12: Speaking practice - How to make/do something
Week 13: Language review - the simple future tense
Term shortened due to Covid-19
Although the title of this course is gSpeaking,h we will also do some reading aloud for pronunciation and listening practice to enhance your English speaking ability. I will give demonstrations and gen-eral guidance about what I expect you to do. I will also provide individual help with your English. Grammar accuracy and basic descriptive skills will be pursued through homework.
You will be evaluated by your contribution to class (70%), and homework (30%). If your contribu-tion is not of sufficient length or quality, you will be asked to do it again.
